RIP Jon Dee Graham
the glue in the Austin music community is gone
Jon Dee Graham passed away on March 27, 2026. I didn’t know him well. But the outpouring of grief at his passing displayed his importance to the Austin music scene and beyond. Even a national figure like Rachel Maddow acknowledged it on her Facebook page. It turns out she hired him to do a private show at some point, and they became friends.
I first saw him play when he was a member of the storied Austin band the True Believers, a band that also featured Alejandro and Javier Escovedo. They were the opener on a bill at Irving Plaza in New York City with Dumptruck and the Fleshtones. (how’s that for an 80s lineup?) I had never heard of the Troobs, as they were referred to, but by the end of their set, they turned into this guitar army that was impossible to ignore. By the mid to late 90s, Graham was a solo artist who took the occasional turn as a sideman. I especially remember his time with country star Kelly Willis. It was then that his weekly Wednesday night residency at the Continental Club began. With James McMurtry following Graham on most Wednesdays, I once joked it was a good way to ruin the rest of your week if you were just a tiny bit over-served. Throughout, he was seemingly everyone’s friend. So many recounted his acts of kindness over the years, it was astounding. In the past few years, he had a series of health issues that Graham was frank about online, and they were incredibly painful to witness. I can’t imagine how he lived through it
The last couple of times I saw Jon Dee perform were in intimate house concert settings. We spoke briefly each time before he played in someone’s living room to a crowd of aficionados who appreciated his gritty truth in song. He seemed in good spirits despite reports of horrific spinal surgeries that had sidelined him for most of 2025. I think he was just glad to be able to pick up a guitar and play. His family has set up a GoFundMe asking for some financial help. Give if you can. There are also a few of his famed “bear drawings” out there. Those will be collector’s items someday. For now, rest easy, Jon Dee. It was difficult to see while you were living, but you really did live a big, sweet life.

Rachel has been a fan since she was a DJ at WRSI in Northampton, MA back in the early ‘aughts. She tried to get them to add Jon Dee into regular rotation when SUMMERLAND came out, and when they wouldn’t, she did a workaround and got them to approve ‘October’ as a Blues cut - the deejays could play one approved Blues cut per hour.
Thank you Jim. He and I were close although we didn’t see each other much the last several years. His reach was deep and wide, and his friendship is one I’ll always treasure. ❤️
